Literature Text

Its so damn hot
'cause I live in the desert
oh I wish and pray
for some semblance of weather

a wisp of a cloud
a cooling breeze
a soft summer rain
the changing of leaves

I need to have water
I need to see snow
I crave to wear jackets and beanies
and complain of the cold

I would love to stay in
on a cool winters day
but this isn't the land
of clouds that are grey

this is land of heat and of sand
of warm crushing winds
and destructive mount-tans

of sandblasting sun blocking
dirt from the ground
of scalding asphalt and
heatstroke year round

have we fallen too many of our shade bearing trees
planted the wrong ones in place of these

are we growing the right foods
eating too much meat
where is our water
our lakes are empty

oh California
oh states of south west
we need to do better
we need to be best

too long have we squandered our precious resources
from the days we arrived in covered wagons and horses

we've terraformed our home to fit all our needs
but our needs have expanded and may force us to leave

to leave the sunshine
to leave our coast
to leave the majesty
of our home with most

so be water wise
use less; it need be
we cannot continue
to live so care free.
A poem of warning and wishing
